Gathering men for fellowship, food, and focus.
October 10, 2009
Southern Baptist Men in the United States and Canada will be joining Baptist Men in Great Britain and Nigeria on October 10, 2009, for a “somewhat” simultaneous men’s breakfast.
Begun in the United Kingdom in 2008, Baptist Men from across England gathered in churches, homes, and restaurants at 9 a.m. for breakfast and more. Besides sharing a meal, The Bigger Breakfast became the forum for challenging men to focus on their role as spiritual leaders.
“The British are recapturing what worked for years in North America and the U.K.,” said Jim Burton, Mission Education team leader of the North American Mission Board. “Men enjoy the fellowship of these events, and when there’s the added advantage of good speakers and a well-planned program that can help them focus on God’s priorities for their life, an event like The Bigger Breakfast can launch a church’s efforts to minister to and with men.”
For Southern Baptists, The Bigger Breakfast theme is about mission action both in the community and beyond. The following day is World Hunger Sunday in Southern Baptist churches, and The Bigger Breakfast will emphasize that at the men’s Saturday gatherings.
“With the time difference between North America and Europe, and all of our time zones in North America, we won’t be able to meet at exactly the same time with the British,” Burton said. “But by joining them that day, we’ll be part of an event that potentially could be one of the largest men’s breakfast events ever.
“I would encourage churches to make this an occasion where men feel free to bring their friends, sons, grandsons, or other boys. Guests and children need to see Christian men gathering for the priority of connecting with God’s mission."
Southern Baptist churches planning to participate in The Bigger Breakfast are asked to register their intent. Church men’s leaders will find a recommended program plan for their breakfast meeting at this site and by registering for BMEN Online.
